20 Years of the SWCC Creed: Anchored in Heritage, Ready for the Future

30 July 2025

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Special Warfare Combat Crewman (SWCC) Creed—a defining statement that has shaped the identity, values, and standards of the warriors who operate Naval Special Warfare’s combatant craft.

For two decades, the SWCC Creed has been more than words—it’s been a way of life. Born from a commitment to honor, integrity, and peak performance, it serves as the backbone of the SWCC community.

Established on July 28, 2005, the Creed was crafted to unify SWCC operators, define their identity, and reinforce the legacy forged in the waters of WWII and Vietnam. It echoes a history of bravery—of PT boats navigating hostile waters and riverine forces pushing through adversity.

The driving force behind the Creed? A need to set a clear standard. Inspired by the SEAL Ethos, which celebrated its 20-year anniversary in May, nearly 30 SWCC operators and a small team of seasoned SEAL officers gathered at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, to put their identity into words. Led by then-Cmdr. Mike Lumpkin, their mission was simple but profound: define the core beliefs that make SWCC what it is today.

The result? A powerful declaration of what it means to be a SWCC. The Creed is a reminder that readiness is a mindset, that maintaining craft, skills, and self at peak condition is not optional—it’s essential. It champions the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment. The Creed is a promise to push forward with relentless perseverance and selfless teamwork.

“For twenty years, the Creed has been the bedrock of the SWCC community,” said Rear Adm. Jamie Sands, commander, Naval Special Warfare Command. “It’s a constant call to action for every SWCC to embody its principles—from steadfast dedication and operational excellence to ensuring the traditions of courage and sacrifice are upheld.”

Today, as Naval Special Warfare navigates a Maritime Century, the Creed remains a guiding force for its boat operators. It’s the benchmark that every SWCC holds themselves to, a daily reminder that high standards aren’t optional—they’re expected.

SWCC members don’t just recite it. They live it. They preach it. They hold each other accountable to meet it.

On time, On target, Never Quit!

In August 2020, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command and the NSW Force Master Chief signed an official update to the SWCC Creed to better reflect our ranks now and into the future.
